In the case of housing for the homeless in LA, the root cause of these homelessness per individual needs to be sought. People don’t become homeless by chance, something led to them unable to provide shelter for themselves. The plan by the Mayor of LA is excellent but I think he and his team needs to go back to the drawing board. After providing shelter of about 600,000 dollars for a man who doesn’t have a job, what becomes of the bills? This emergency should not be used as a political tool but treated as a real emergency. NGOs and humanitarian organizations could be allowed to come in with solutions. Academic institutions could look into ways of addressing such issues by doing researches and working with think tanks to find a way out.
For the NEPAL Wildlife Conservation using Google glass, I find it novel and encourage such innovative technologies. But it doesn’t end there. The government should have and implement conservation policies against poaching of these precious animals. When such policies are implemented, the Google Glass Technology would thrive. Note the glass is only going to play it’s role if Conservation is championed by governments. Kudos to the Nepalese for the growth in the rhino population.
For Employing Refugees in Netherlands, nations have put boundaries around humanity. The video have proven some wins with Ali, Ilnaz and Alisat but these are few win cases. There have been lots of stories especially in Europe where many employers profile potential employees and gives an instant rejection based on their background or other factors. This will continue being the case if policies to support refugees are not put in place. The employers will have all the powers to reject qualified potential employees who are refugees. Policies especially good ones make the difference in such situations.
I do agree with your observations. It requires more than initiatives of social organizations to bring change in society. But we have to start somewhere, keeping in mind that the institutions, politics, and other actors in society should respond and change as well.
